Quick Flashes Pervert Cop Pleads Guilty: Officer Jason Faulk resigned from the Bureau and pleaded guilty to official misconduct for having sex with a woman who has autism (PPR #43). Followup to his statement "I've had sex on duty before" was cut off by his attorney (Oregonian, January 17). Police Use of Force Leads to Dismissed Charges Numerous Portlanders who have been roughed up by police have subsequently not been found guilty of crimes, according to a lengthy article in the Oregonian's "In Portland" section (April 10). One woman, Lyudmila Trivol, had her arm broken; another, Charity Johnson, was hit with a Taser; other cases we've written about before include Ryan Dunn, a protestor hurt in October 2006 and Frank Waterhouse, a man who was tasered for videotaping police (PPR #43). Many of them were subjected to undue force after challenging the police, and, as attorney Greg Kafoury put it, "once you beat up a guy, you arrest him or else you've got some explaining to do." Although they all were charged with crimes such as resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and interfering with a police officer, 6 of the 10 people profiled were acquitted by juries and the other 4 had their charges dropped. Jurors questioned why Portland police and the DA even bothered bringing the cases to trial. |
